All students of Excel Music learn to read music. Teachers will devise a customized curriculum for each student which will incorporate the style of music that the student wants to learn in addition to teaching music theory, history and other appropriate musical skills.

Brass Lessons

Trumpet, French horn, trombone, baritone/euphonium and tuba

  • Recommended starting age: 10
  • Recommended lesson length:
  • Age 10-11, 30 minutes
  • Above age 11, 60 minutes

Equipment needed: You’ll need a good-quality, student-model instrument of the appropriate size to practice at home and bring to your lessons. Renting is an excellent option, especially for beginning students. We recommend consulting with the teacher before renting or purchasing an instrument, as some inexpensive instruments can be unreliable or difficult to play.

Brass Lessons

Practice time: 15-20 minutes per day for beginners, increasing over time to at least an hour per day.

Starting age: We recommend age 10 as a great age to begin learning a brass instrument. Students need sufficient lung capacity, physical development and facial muscle control to produce a consistent tone. Instrument size is also important, particularly for trombone, French horn, baritone/euphonium and tuba. The teacher can help determine which brass instrument is the best fit for each student.

Additional info: Private lessons in conjunction with school music programs are a great way for students to receive the individual attention they need to develop proper breathing, tone production, technique and musicianship. Band directors appreciate students who study privately because large school ensembles allow limited time for individual instruction. Private lessons can be invaluable to a student’s progress and confidence.
